The Swamp

a retreat from life

in the swamp

where leeches collect

jarred in peanut butter glass

broken tiles

float to clay’s clear bottom

rounded by few cat tails

black garters multiply

siphoning water with forks

eggs hatching by hundreds

a gelatinous mass

frogs’ eggs suspend

in quiet waters

a child’s camp

alone

for fantasies founded

on child’s quiet aloneness,

solitude and safety’s

sake

Paranoia

anxiety spreads as contagion

infecting mind, emotion, body

and will

until all bow to the disease

paranoia

in dreams

nightmares

in wakefulness

as visions

until all of life

becomes

focused fear
